What is Abstract Art? How do we do it?

What is abstract art?

You might have been thinking about what really goes on inside the heads of these “abstract artists” :) Been there; Wondered the same. But to know what abstract art really is, I feel - you have to start being one.

At present, abstract modern art is taking the world by storm. People love these mysterious art pieces, minimal marks, bold strokes, complex design - Mostly because they feel a connection with the work.

Let me start by explaining to you what ‘abstract modern art’ means to me.

The definition of abstract art can be a form of self-expression for a few artists. For a few other artists ‘abstract art definition’ could be a landscape, a portrait or a place that interests them.

To be precise, abstract is a form of ‘nonrepresentational art’ where the artist does not paint what they see but what they perceive and what they want to express. This representation of abstract art is mostly, via the choice of colors, shapes and lines that the artist wants to express with.

Examples of Abstraction:

  • Portrait abstract painters: Artists who work with abstract paintings of faces; usually try to strike a balance with what they see and what they want to express. The expression part is usually done by using a variety of colors, values, tones and textures that the abstract artist wants to represent with.

In addition to this, the artist may also ensure that the likeness of the model is preserved. To sum up about portrait abstracts, it can be an expressive process that would talk in terms of both the likeness and the emotions of the model/person.

  • Canvas abstract wall art can be either intuitive or with a reference i.e. either we can execute a landscape with abstract textures and colors or intuitively. Both has its own beauty.

This is a small canvas painting that I did in an intuitive way. The idea was to create an art that was calming and coinciding with my current state of mind.

The process was via trials and errors. Pretty much what felt right to me at that point of time?

  • There is also an interesting way of executing abstracts – It is via - Graphic abstract.

Graphic abstracts is a way of reducing a number of visual elements but still giving the onlooker an idea about the scene or the person. It is rather an interesting way of working with abstracts.

Here is a beautiful example that I found on Unsplash.com.

So, How do we create a contemporary art abstract?

The answer is mostly subjective. In addition to this, a prior knowledge of composition and color theory would amp up the work.

If your next question is, how to be an abstract painter? here you go..:)

I'm guessing that its your first try with abstracts, here are a few tips that will help you to create easy abstract drawings!

1. Have an open mind. Appreciate the colors as they are and they will speak for you.

2. Accept that it is going to take a while to get to the point where it makes sense to you.

3. Try to start with a sketchbook practice and not larger surfaces.

4. Choose a color palette that you can resonate with, at that particular point of time.

5. Tint the surface with a color or a few scribbles to reduce the fear of a blank white surface :)

6. Start adding in colors, use color theory here ;)

7. Refine them at the places where you feel it is unbalanced – use composition here ;)

8. Scribble or add marks at any point of time.

9. Finish off when you are happy with the colors and the balance of elements(composition)

10. Most importantly - Appreciate your artwork and the end result.

One of the many pluses of abstract art is that it can be incredibly rewarding to see the end product. In addition to that, you will start appreciating colors more.
